Surrounded by pine woods, the grounds at Newbold offer a peaceful haven which encompass ornamental lawns and beds, an apple orchard, wild flower areas, a walled vegetable garden and woodland where red squirrels and roe deer are a frequent sight. The front lawn is our most open space, surrounded by a variety of trees it has been used for circle dances, ceremonies, games and sunbathing. Here we also grow cut flowers to fill the house with the beauty and scent of the garden.

Moving towards the back of the house you pass the various caravans and a yurt where some of our community sleep. The lawns around these small dwellings are dotted with flowers and apple trees of which we have many old and rare varieties.

The walled garden at the back of the house is where we grow much of our organic food.

Walled Garden and GreenhouseWe have beds of vegetables, herbs, and fruits of many varieties. In days gone by, the rear south facing wall allowed the cultivation of plums, peaches, and vines and today we still grow plums and other fruit from warmer climes. Around this garden there are areas for contemplation and relaxing, one small garden we call the peace garden is in the walls of an old greenhouse that once stood on the site.

“In all my years of teaching the Authentic Movement practice I have never worked anywhere that answered our every need so exquisitely as does Newbold House. When engaging in deep inner work that opens our sensibilities, it is so important to be in surroundings that feel right in every way. Such is Newbold, where the residents give careful attention to each detail of life, providing beauty, comfort, truly delicious food and open hearts. We felt so well held and cared for. The tranquillity of the setting—the beautiful old home surrounded by spacious grounds and a walled garden lovingly tended– allowed each of us to find our own quiet places whenever we needed them. We also felt welcomed into the community, with the invitation to join the morning meditation and Taize singing if we wished. I look forward to returning to Newbold again and again, stepping out of the whirl of life and entering a most delightful sanctuary.” – Fran Lavendel
