The day will start at 9:15am with Yoga Nidra.
Yoga Nidra is yogic sleep, attaining a state of total release of tension and deep relaxation. When this happens, the deeper phases of your mind opens – the subconscious and unconscious mind. Importantly, it’s not a hypnotic state – you will at all time maintain a sense of awareness. The ultimate purpose is to take you into a state where you are completely united with your inner being. It’s here where real change can take place. To me Yoga Nidra was life transforming, which is why I would like to pass it on. It allowed me to resolve deep feelings that I had wrestled with in my conscious mind for many years. The session will be carried out in line with its original roots as instructed by Swami Satyananda Saraswati and further developed by my own teacher Roshi Daizan.
After Yoga Nidra, we will have a tea break and you may want to pop out for some fresh air in the beautiful grounds of Newbold House.
In the second part of the workshop, we will practise Zen Yoga, which was brought over to the UK by my teacher Roshi Daizan in 2007. This form of yoga is practised in Zen monasteries throughout South East Asia with its roots ultimately stretching back to the Buddha in India around 500BC Mindfulness is at the heart of Zen Yoga – to quieten down the mind. Energy work and physical alignment are the other two important pillars in Zen Yoga. We are part of nature and affected by its cycles – both physically and emotionally. Zen Yoga is based on the Eastern system of the five elements taking into account the current season. In winter, Zen Yoga is about slowing down, restoring and physically mobilising the joints. The organs that tend to be vulnerable in the winter are the kidneys and the bladder and the emotional state that we aim to strengthen is courage, to develop a ‘can do’ attitude. This will be incorporated into the practice through movements and postures that support the associated meridian lines.
We will finish at 12:45pm – with a mind at peace.
